New York City sits inside some of the most tightly controlled airspace in the country, layered over LaGuardia, JFK, and Newark, with additional no-fly zones around landmarks, bridges, and government buildings. That complexity is the first problem any production runs into before a drone ever leaves the ground. Xizmo Media clears the airspace authorization and flight plan first, then shoots the aerial videography a director needs for the final cut, from a slow reveal of the skyline for a title sequence to a low pass along the Hudson for a commercial spot.
NYC’s Airspace Adds a Permitting Step Most Cities Skip

Xizmo Media pilots capture cinematic aerial footage over the NYC skyline for film, TV, and commercial productions.
Manhattan and most of the outer boroughs sit inside Class B controlled airspace shared by three major airports. A standard Part 107 certificate lets a pilot fly commercially anywhere in the country, but it doesn’t clear a production to enter controlled airspace on its own. Every flight inside that shell needs a separate FAA authorization tied to the exact block of airspace and altitude the shot requires.
Add standing no-fly restrictions over landmarks, bridges, stadiums, and government buildings, plus temporary flight restrictions that can appear with little notice around events like a UN session, and a production can lose a shoot day to paperwork it never budgeted for. We plan that authorization alongside the shot list, so the flight window and the creative brief get locked at the same time, instead of finding out on the morning of the call sheet that the location is grounded.
From Cleared Airspace to Finished Footage
Once the airspace is cleared, the shoot itself moves like any other production day: a scouted flight path, a pilot and camera operator working off the same shot list as the ground crew, and footage handed off in the codec and frame rate post needs. Xizmo Media has built that workflow around productions specifically, covering everything from a single establishing shot to a multi-day shoot schedule.
For projects that need a full crew beyond the drone itself, camera operators, a director of photography, grip and lighting, our drone filming company arranges the complete production package. Aerial video is also available as one line item within a larger shoot; see the full drone videography services menu for options like real estate flyovers, live event coverage, and 3D mapping passes.
Aerial Footage That Slots Into a Larger NYC Production
This page covers the airspace clearance and cinematic capture side of a shoot, the part that happens before cameras roll and that determines what’s actually flyable over Manhattan, Brooklyn, or the other boroughs on a given day. For a closer look at how the service breaks down borough by borough, including gear and turnaround differences between a Midtown rooftop shoot and a Staten Island exterior, see our NYC drone cinematography services overview.
Licensed to Fly Where Most Operators Can’t
Established in 2008, Xizmo Media is FAA 333 exempt and Part 107 licensed, including a night operations waiver that lets the team fly after dark over New York City when a production calls for it. The company also carries a $5M liability policy, the level most studios, networks, and location managers require before they’ll clear a drone for a shoot.
